Bruno Restif, L'Âge d'or des paroisses, 15e-18e siècles.

Marcel Metzger, Local community, ministries and churches during the first centuries of Christianity, RDC 67/2, 2017, p. 309-323.

The documentation that is still available to us allows to reconstruct the formation of the pastoral institutions within cities such as Rome or Constantinople but also throughout the countryside, albeit with less precision. Local communities implemented collegial institutions for the ministries and communion institutions for the assemblies. The pastoral evolutions as well as the complex history of those communities during the seven first centuries account for the diverse customs and the influences of the local situations.

Bruno Restif, Fifteenth-eighteenth century: the golden age of parishes. A historical analysis of the geographical and sociological diversity, and some thoughts on the present time, RDC 67/2, 2017, p. 325-343.

The time that runs from the fifteenth to the eighteenth century is undoubtedly the peak of the parochial structure and civilization, seen here with the French context. However, its apparent uniformity should not hide the great geographical and sociological diversity that is revealed notably through the parochial archives of the fabriques. Such a diversity is easily accounted for by the rural communities' diversity, as much as by the various pastoral choices that were made to meet this very diversity. In the west, the policy was a success, not quite as much elsewhere. This should give us pause and encourage a reflexion in modern time on what is a community, a local Church, an effective pastoral care and the sharing of responsibilities between laypeople and clergy.

Alphonse Ky-zerbo, The teaching of Pope Francis relative to the parish according to the Apostolic Exhortation Evangelii Gaudium, RDC 67/2, 2017, p. 345-362.

Twenty-five years after Pope John Paul II Apostolic Exhortation Christifideles laici, Pope Francis, in Apostolic Exhortation Evangelii Gaudium, teaches that the parish constitutes an ecclesiastical presence and community of communities whose first mission is evangelization. Its reform implies an aggiornamento of the institution, to be sure, since it is not obsolete. However, it requires also the implementation of its functional structures entailed by the Second Vatican Council and the 1983 Canon Law Codex (and its updates). Nevertheless, such an implementation cannot dispense with the docility and the missionary creativity of the pastor as well as those of the community whose first and foremost goal has to remain the mission to evangelize.

Anne Bamberg, Worship buildings versus parochial restructuration: some thoughts on Canon 1222, §2, RDC 67/2, 2017, p. 363-388.

On one hand, this paper analyses the conditions and the right process through which Ecclesiastical authority seeks to convert a church building to a profane use, and underlines the guidelines drawn by the Congregation of the Clergy. On the other, based on the studies and judicial decisions relative to this issue, the author wonders if it is worthwhile to open hierarchical and administrative procedures in such a case.

Jean-Paul Russeil, Reshaping parishes: a long-term achievement. The example of the diocese of Poitiers, RDC 67/2, 2017, p. 389-396.

The reshaping of the parishes in the Poitier diocese has been conducted according to canonical framework provided by diocesan synods. Such a process invites us to a pastoral and theological consideration: several issues regarding today and the future are thus underlined. Notably, it is necessary to take the time to instigate various process and a missionary conscience. Establishing a new territorial map is not enough.

Bernard Xibaut, The parochial reconfiguration within the diocese of Strasbourg. The «parochial communities», RDC 67/2, 2017, p. 397-401.

The diocese of Strasbourg, since it could not undertake a fusion of parishes, but «groupings» of the said parishes into «communities of parishes», because the Concordat acknowledges legal personality to the churches «fabrique». Therefore, 170 communities have been superposed upon the older 767 parishes, and canonical rules have been slightly adapted. On one hand, although Canon 517, §2 allows the implementation of a pastoral animation team only within a vacant parish, such teams have been provided to each community of parishes (among which, de facto, all the parishes are «half-vacant» but for the where the pastor resides). On the other hand, the «pluralism of benefices» has been subtly re-established, since he who becomes pastor of the «community of parishes» is canonically the pastor of all the parishes (which can expand from one to seventeen). However, can we still speak of a parish in terms of a «benefice».

Mgr Francis Bestion, Various considerations regarding the reshaping of parishes. The example of the diocese of Tulle, RDC 67/2, 2017, p. 403-412.

The pastoral orientations of the Tulle diocese do not follow the frame of a restructuration of the parishes. It offers a new model to take charge pastorally of the existing local communities. These are to be found under three different fundamental realities: priestly fraternities, pastoral animation teams and local missionary fraternities. This is a missionary process where time is more important than space, and where the idea of «territory» is gradually replaced by that of «community».

Elisabeth Abbal, The reconfiguration of parishes as an object of research, RDC 67/2, 2017, p. 413-438.

Within all the dioceses, the continuous growth of the territorial network along the line of the grouping of parishes goes hand in hand with the implementation of a renewed work organization between priests and lay people in charge in accord with the notion of governance. However, the search for another relationship of the parish with its area than the strict territorial local grid leads us to question the relevance of the transition from the image of the enclosure to that of the hub around which ecclesiastical life is structured.

Laurent Villemin, The office in light of the parochial reconfigurations, RDC 67/2, 2017, p. 439-445.

A definition of the office in canon law represents a prerequisite for a better understanding of the impact of reconfigurations on the parochial functioning. The study emphasizes the diversity of offices. The initiative of the diocese of Nancy allows to illustrate this point of view, through the creation of the office of «parochial coordinator».

Alphonse Borras, The community of the faithful to the test of the reshaping of the parishes, RDC 67/2, 2017, p. 447-464.

Reshaping the parishes creates some kind of a true synodality on the field of the parish. Such a process is not always met with a formal structure, but at least synodality exists here in a nascent fashion, which is not to be overlooked. The present magisterium invites us to enhance collective dynamics in all the aspects of the Church's mission along the path of synodality. The current reshaping of the parish is an opportunity to try this process out.

Benoît Malvaux, Towards new forms of consecrated life?, RDC 67/2, 2017, p. 467-484.

Canon 605 provides that the Holy-See might approve new forms of consecrated life that could be added to the already existing four forms recognized by the 1983 Codex. If its theory is obvious, the implementation of this canon is more problematic. This paper depicts the present situation, focusing notably on the «Ecclesiastical Family of Consecrated Life» presented by the Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life which might be able to honour various new communities' specificity without demeaning the essential elements of a life consecrated through the profession of the evangelical counsels.

Ataa Denkha, The reform of the annulment process and its bearing over the role of the defender of the bond, RDC 67/2, 2017, p. 485-517.

This paper studies the task of the defender of the bond during a matrimonial process after the changes brought about by the Motu proprio Mitis Iudes Dominus Iesus. Have these new legal dispositions weakened or strengthened his role? These very changes, in the light of the results of a field research led among defenders of the bond siting in French speaking tribunals, allow to follow various lines of approach.
